Welcome to be that lawyer, where we provide life changing strategies and resources for growing a successful law practice. Have you ever asked yourself the question? How did I become the person I am today? For me, the year was 1996. When I literally fell out of the sky in a Cherokee Piper six passenger airplane. We lost our engine at 5000 feet and crash landed into a house in Crystal Lake, Illinois. They say in a near death experience. You see your life flash before your eyes. It's not really how things work. It's panic, it's fear. And if you're lucky hope for me and the five other passengers it was the worst nightmare you could imagine. The last thing I remember was peering out the window as the plane slammed into the ground. I woke up minutes later as medics were pulling my terribly damaged body out of the wreckage. The pain was indescribable. And the follow up for me was months of rehab, with temporary loss of my arms and ability to walk. It's possible for you as you're listening to imagine how sorry, I must have felt for myself in this situation. Oddly enough, the opposite happened. I decided right there and then that my life needed to mean something and that I was going to make a difference. The question was how? Hello everybody. I'm Steve frets in a business development coach for attorneys who never thought attorneys needed any help with business development. In 2008. When the recession occurred, I was heavily recruited into the legal space when lawyers who didn't have their own books of business found themselves in trouble when the business slow down. Lawyers began to realize maybe for the first time that building and maintaining their own book of business is the single most important element to success and financial security as an attorney. Additionally, lawyers learned that my methodologies were non salesy, relationship driven and highly consultative. Since lawyers hate sales and being salesy as much as I do. They were relieved to enter into one of my programs to learn a more comfortable, efficient and results driven approach to business development. If you were to ask any of the hundreds of lawyers that I've had the great pleasure to work with, they would tell you that I'm personally invested in their success. In the legal space time is literally money. So lawyers hire me to learn business development in the most effective way possible, using proven methodologies. In case you wanted to learn more about my experience and expertise in the legal industry, I've written three books on legal marketing and business development. They're available on Amazon. I've been featured in the Chicago Tribune cranes an entrepreneur calm. Additionally, I've had guest appearances on NBC News and wg and radio. I've written articles for Chicago lawyer magazine, the National Law Review, the American Bar Association, the Illinois State Bar Association, and you can find my monthly column in the Chicago daily law bulletin. Well, enough about me, this show is actually about how I can help you. The podcast is going to be all about what you want and need as a lawyer to do one thing, be that lawyer, I want to help you grow your law practice in the most efficient and effective way possible. So we'll be discussing topics including business development, marketing, branding, technology, and even some operations like how to grow your own small law practice. My goal is to educate and share best practices related to these topics so that you the listener can get real value from my show. By openly sharing direct ideas, concepts, my teachings, and interviewing rainmakers, and even past clients of mine who are doing things the right way, you'll get tremendous value week after week. Not only do I teach proven methodologies, but you'll start to see how that's so much better than just winging it. Additionally, you want to enjoy yourself listening to some funny and entertaining and insightful banter, stories and analogies. I think we'll keep things really light. But we'll also get into some real in depth content, discussions that will keep you entertained, educated and coming back week after week. The best part is I want my show to actually help you obtain direct business, from the content that's being absorbed from you as a regular and loyal listener. So you're wondering, is this show for me? I can tell you that as a business coach for attorneys in the past decade or so, I've heard and seen it all. I know what you're going through the trials and tribulations of being an attorney billing hours trying to keep ahead of things, while also thinking in the back of your head how important it is to develop your own book of business. The Times are changing. In fact, any legal recruiter will tell you, it's all about the book baby. They ask the first question is not where you went to school, not what your expertise in an area, they're gonna say, what's your book. So this show is for attorneys who want more freedom, enjoyment, and most importantly, control over their career through building a book of business. The format of the show is going to be pretty straightforward. I'm going to interview top rainmakers, legal marketing professionals, technology experts, people that are going to give you again, insights and ways to grow your law practice as well as what I've been teaching for years. The show will be about 30 minutes in length, and we'll release one new episode per week. And I hope you'll give it a try. And again, maybe we can partner together moving forward so that you can have your best year every year. like to thank you for listening and I hope that you'll enjoy our show moving forward.
